Different waterproof rating levels of smart bike locks

The waterproof rating of smart bike locks comes in various levels.Today, let's discuss the different waterproof tests required for each rating.Typically, personal smart bike locks spend less time outdoors compared to smart bike locks used on shared bikes, which are always deployed outdoors. As such, shared bikes or e-bikes require a higher waterproof rating, and the smart bike locks on them are no exception, needing to pass rigorous waterproof tests.

smart bike lock

The waterproof rating of smart bike locks is usually measured according to the international protection rating standard(IP rating). The most common waterproof ratings include:

IPX4:Protects against splashing water from all directions, suitable for daily rain environments.

IPX5:Protects against low-pressure water jets from any direction, ideal for stronger rain and water spray environments.

IPX6:Protects against high-pressure water jets, suitable for harsher weather conditions.

IPX7:Can withstand immersion in water up to 1 meter deep for a short time, ensuring the lock remains waterproof in brief underwater scenarios.

IPX8:Can withstand continuous immersion in water deeper than 1 meter, ensuring the lock functions without damage in deep water.

IPX7 Waterproof Rating: Ensuring Durability of Smart Bike Locks for Shared and Rental E-Bikes

IPX7 is generally considered a high waterproof rating for smart bike locks.A smart lock that passes the IPX7 waterproof test is perfectly suited for shared bikes or rental e-bikes,which are exposed to outdoor conditions for extended periods, need to withstand varying temperatures, and be dust-and waterproof.Shared bike operators and owners don't have to worry about smart locks failing to function in heavy rain or water spray environments, which could lead to operational failures and significant losses.

The following outlines the IPX7 test procedure:

Submerge the smart bike lock in a container filled with water to a depth of 1 meter.

The smart bike lock is submerged for 30 minutes.

After soaking, the sample is removed, and the smart bike lock is inspected according to the product standards.

Verifying QR Code Unlocking and Internal Water Resistance in Smart Bike Locks

Test personnel will use a mobile app to scan the QR code of the smart bike lock while it is submerged. If the lock opens normally, and if it also unlocks when scanned after being removed from the 1-meter-deep container, the smart lock has passed the IPX7 waterproof rating test.

Additionally, the test personnel will open the outer casing to inspect the internal components of the lock, checking for any signs of water ingress or watermarks. If no water droplets or traces are found, the product passes the IPX7 waterproof test.
